Competency-Based Interview Questions.

Competency-based interviews (common in graduate schemes, the public sector, and structured hiring) score each answer against a defined competency — teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, initiative. The interviewer often has a rubric. Answer with a single concrete example that clearly demonstrates the competency, and be sure your own contribution is unmistakable.

THE QUESTION BANK

Common competency-based questions.

Each question maps to a scored competency. Give one clear example with evidence — say "I", not "we". Say your answer out loud before you read the cue — the cue is what a strong answer shows, never a script.

Teamwork

Give an example of when you worked effectively as part of a team.

Look forYour specific role and contribution — "I" not "we" — since the interviewer is scoring you, plus the result the team reached.
Problem-solving

Describe a complex problem you solved. What was your approach?

Look forA clear method: how you broke the problem down, the options you weighed, and the measurable outcome — reasoning, not just the answer.
Adaptability

Tell me about a time you had to adapt to a significant change at work.

Look forHow you stayed effective through the change and helped others do the same — resilience with evidence, not just "I’m flexible".
Initiative

Give an example of when you went beyond what was required of you.

Look forThat you spotted the need yourself and acted on it, and the impact it had — self-starting over waiting to be told.
ANSWER WITH STRUCTURE

Use the STAR method.

Competency-Based answers land when they’re a story, not a list of adjectives. STAR keeps you specific and stops you rambling: four beats, most of your time on the Action.

SSituationSet the scene in a sentence — where, when, the stakes.
TTaskWhat you specifically were responsible for.
AActionWhat YOU did — the steps, and why you chose them.
RResultHow it turned out, ideally with a number, and what you learned.
