Situational Interview Questions.

Situational questions hand you a hypothetical and watch how you reason. There’s rarely one right answer — they’re scoring your judgment, how you weigh trade-offs, and how you’d communicate along the way. Where you have a real example that fits, use it; otherwise walk through how you’d actually approach it, step by step.

THE QUESTION BANK

Common situational questions.

These are hypotheticals — "what would you do if…" Talk through your judgment and process, not a memorized answer. Say your answer out loud before you read the cue — the cue is what a strong answer shows, never a script.

Prioritization

You’re given two urgent tasks with the same deadline and can only finish one. What do you do?

Look forThat you clarify priorities and constraints with the right people and communicate the trade-off — not silently pick one and hope.
Difficult customer

A customer is angry about a problem that isn’t your fault. How do you handle it?

Look forThat you de-escalate first, own the resolution regardless of blame, and set honest expectations about what happens next.
Teamwork

A teammate isn’t pulling their weight on a shared deadline. What would you do?

Look forA direct-but-kind conversation focused on the shared goal before escalating — addressing it, not resenting it or going straight to the manager.
Integrity

You realize you made a mistake that no one has noticed yet. What do you do?

Look forThat you surface it early with a fix or a plan in hand — integrity over hoping it slips by unseen.
ANSWER WITH STRUCTURE

Use the STAR method.

Situational answers land when they’re a story, not a list of adjectives. STAR keeps you specific and stops you rambling: four beats, most of your time on the Action.

SSituationSet the scene in a sentence — where, when, the stakes.
TTaskWhat you specifically were responsible for.
AActionWhat YOU did — the steps, and why you chose them.
RResultHow it turned out, ideally with a number, and what you learned.
